Difference between commercial and public services
Commercial:
Channel- Fox
Products produced by this channel include Fox news (news), Family guy (comedy), Agents of shield (super heroes) and LA's Finest (drama/action).
Fox's targeted audience ranges from Teens from ages 13, to adults aged 40. Fox News targets a demographic that mainly consists of white Parents who are in the social grade C1, C2, D and E as it is used to inform and educate about politics and daily events. Ashwell as this there is a lack of representation for minorities in Fox news which leads less different cultures to watching the show. As for the rest of Fox their demographics are in a similar social grade as the shows are a form of escapism for their lives. Shows such as Family guy appeal to the male teen to adult demographic due to their adult humour and the fact that it is a cartoon. While a show such as LA's Finest may appeal to the older male population and also people who aspire to be a policemen or are already one. it could also appeal to people who live in Los Angeles or around the location in which it was shot. This is due to the show being centred around the LA's police force and the fact that it is an action/ drama hybrid.
Public service company
Channel 4
and BBC2
BBC2 offers content such as BBC news, which is a news station that is to inform the pubic about the weather, events or politics. This is because Public service companies such as the BBC must inform and educate the public as well as present entertainment. During the afternoon shows like 800 words are on, this show is a comedy/ drama hybrid that is a PG meaning everyone can watch it as long as children have parental guidance. This media product is more so to entertain the public rather than educate them. The target audience for shows like these are family's in the social grade of C2, D, E as many family's cannot afford services like sky or Netflix so these shows are meant for family's of all genders, religion ect… to sit down and enjoy the media product.
Channel 4 offers content similar to BBC 2 as it does also has shows that are for pure entertainment, such as Holly oaks that is targeted towards women from ages 30 and up. As its a drama that focuses on the lives on the people living in a small town. However channel 4 also offers there 11:00 news summary which is used to inform and educate the public just like BBC news is.
After looking at both of the channels I can say that I do believe the BSP remit is being followed as both channels offer multitude of entertainment shows that have a large demographic. They also have shows that serve to educate the audience, they both offer all these while on a smaller budget as the are given money through the TV licence that most British citizens have.
